Penney Co. has grown rapidly in 38 years. Starting in a small mining town, the company now operates 1,578 stores. From one little store in a small mining town 38 years ago, to 1,578 stores located in every state in the union today, is a growth that testifies the soundness of the J.C. Penney Co. James C. Penney, the founder of Penney’s, opened his first store under the name of the “Golden Rule” in Kemmerer, Wyo., in 1902. He had very little capital but a definite idea of square dealing and, from the very beginning, his venture was a success.
From the Nov. 26, 1953 News Record:
The amount of young people riding sleds in the streets has increased to a dangerous point, Charely Tyrrell, city marshal said this week, and protective action is going to have to be taken before someone is seriously hurt. The marshal suggested that sledding be done above the swimming pool on a run that goes into the football bowl. This offers a good spot away from street traffic. He stated that action will be taken in cases where children continue to use the streets for sleigh riding.

A quick draw artist? A North Dakota man literally lost his nerve in Gillette when practicing “fast draw” with his knife. Dean Fuglem, 19, of Eneta, N.D., was showing off for a friend when he stabbed himself in the right palm, severing nerves and tendons. The man was treated at Campbell County Memorial Hospital for injuries and held overnight. Police were told the man was practicing with a new “Buck” folding knife when the incident occurred.
