HOLLADAY — An off-duty police officer is being credited for saving the life of a jogger from a speeding stolen car and ending a chase in Salt Lake County.
Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says off-duty colleague Jim Karahalios was driving his pickup Saturday morning in Holladay when he learned about a high-speed chase.
He stopped to flag down jogger Sheila Walls and warn her that police were searching for a reckless driver in a Mercedes AMG stolen from a Millcreek-area dealership Wednesday.
Karahalios then saw the Mercedes fishtail toward them and pulled his truck in front of the jogger. The Mercedes crashed into the truck.
Walls praises Karahalios, saying she would have died without his actions.
