Remains of 2 fetuses found in eastern South Dakota

Posted 12/17/12

PIERRE, S.D. — Authorities are treating the discovery of the remains of two fetuses in eastern South Dakota as a homicide investigation.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says the remains were discovered in a rural shelterbelt in Deuel County on Nov. 2. He says the remains of one fetus were found in a cooler and the remains of the second were found outside the cooler.

Jackley says experts have concluded that the fetuses were about 40 weeks old and were capable of living outside the uterus.

Jackley says authorities are asking the public for information that might help authorities. The state Division of Criminal Investigation and the Deuel County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
