RAPID CITY — A private group’s project to build a sculpture garden featuring famous Native Americans in a prominent Rapid City spot is inching forward despite concerns from some city officials about the location.
The location in Halley Park is along two of the city’s busiest throughways, and Parks & Recreation Advisory Board members and parks department staff say parking and access to the sculpture garden would be difficult there, The Rapid City Journal reported.
The First Nations Sculpture Garden will feature four busts of prominent 20th century Native Americans along sidewalks behind the Parks & Recreation building. The proposed location is essentially the median between St. Joseph and West Main streets, and the small parking lot in front of the city building can hold only 17 cars.
