Shyann Lenz
Posted 12/7/12

Shyann Amy Lenz, 9, died with her mother on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, as the result of an airplane crash in Sevier County, Utah.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Black Hills in Piedmont, S.D., with the Rev. Steve Biegler officiating. A second service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain with the Rev. Guy Blair officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Oacoma, S.D.

She was born Feb. 4, 2003, to Mark Allen Lenz and Trista Marie (Meyer) Lenz in Rapid City, S.D. Her parents later divorced when she was 4 years old.

She started school at Piedmont Elementary in Piedmont, S.D., and then moved to Rozet with her mom, where she attended Rozet Elementary. They lived in Rozet with her grandmother, Myra Fees, until buying their own home in Moorcroft.

When her aunt Meridith and uncle Scott moved their family to Gillette, Shyann attended third grade at Prairie Wind Elementary, where Meridith taught until accepting a position at Buffalo Ridge Elementary, where Shyann then attended fourth grade.

Shyann’s dad, Mark, remarried and gave Shyann a brother, Hunter, and sister, Rayne. She loved her brother and sister and was always so proud of them. She loved spending time with her Dad, second mom, Lindsey and her siblings. Her dad moved his family to Gillette to be closer to Shyann and spend more time with her.

She was an amazing little girl, full of love and hope. She had participated in Girl Scouts and was in the process of joining 4-H so she could show her horse and rabbit. Shyann had an immense love for all animals. She wanted to be a veterinarian so she could always take care of them. She was always drawing, making cards and decorations for everyone. When Shyann was curious about an animal, she spent hours researching and printing off facts about the animal and reciting it out loud to anyone who would listen.

Shyann is survived by her father, Mark Lenz; stepmother, Lindsey Lenz; brother Hunter, and sister Rayne, all of Gillette; grandmothers, Myra Fees of Rozet and Jo Mclaughlin of Seymour, Ind.; grandfather, Roger Meyer of Bethel, Minn.; great-grandmothers, Coleen Short of Piedmont, S.D., Evelyn Meyer of Little Falls, Minn., and Faye Fees of Opal, S.D.; her aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.

Shyann was joined in death by her mother, Trista Meyer. Preceding her in death was her grandfather, Richard Mclaughlin, and great-grandfathers, Lloyd Short, Edward Meyer and Glenn Harmon.

A memorial has been established. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.kinkadefunerals.com. Condolences also may be attached to the obituary on the News Record’s website at www.gillettenewsrecord.com.
