PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakotans will have a little extra time to shoot off their July 4 fireworks.
Residents are currently allowed to discharge their holiday fireworks between June 27 and July 5.
The South Dakota Senate passed a bill Monday that would extend the time up to the end of the first Sunday after the July 4 holiday.
The measure passed by a 24-8 motion and is headed to the governor’s desk.
Democratic Sen. Larry Lucas of Mission was one of the lawmakers opposing the change. He said if July 4 falls on a Sunday, people could still be shooting off fireworks on July 11 — and that’s too late.
