Storms improve conditions

Recent storms have provided plenty of new snow for outdoor enthusiasts in northeast Wyoming and the surrounding area. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing and alpine skiing conditions are all very good.
Snowmobile
BIG HORNS
The Big Horns have more than 300 miles of groomed trails and 50 miles of ungroomed trails, as well as endless miles of cross country skiing areas and some of the finest powder in Wyoming. Willow Park and Pole Creek, in particular, offer great cross country skiing opportunities
Roberta Young at Arrowhead Lodge and Resort at Burgess Junction in Dayton said the conditions are excellent. The area received six inches of new snow Wednesday and 12 inches in the higher elevations.
“We’re still grooming the trails, but powder riding is at a four on a scale of 1-to-10, so it’s getting better,” Young said. “Our average average snow depth is 20 to 30 inches.
“Some riders are reporting waste-deep snow at higher elevations, but there is no significant base yet.”
“Boondocking is where people are finding the good snow, off in the woods,” she said.
BLACK HILLS, S.D.
The 1.2 million-acre Black Hills National Forest offers unlimited off-trail riding, in addition to the 350 miles of trails groomed by the South Dakota Snowmobile Program.
Several of the forest’s hiking trails are open to cross country skiing during the winter months, including the Dugout Gulch Botanical Trail (Trail No. 77), the Eagle Cliff Trails (No. 68), and the Beaver Creek Ski Trails (No. 111).

Meadowlark Ski Lodge
Snow: Powder machine groomed with a base of 12 to17 inches.
What’s open: Fourteen of 14 trails and both lifts.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
“We’ve had a lot of good snow through the holiday season. You can never have enough, but we did get snow this week,” Meadowlark spokeswoman Holly Jones said. “We expect fresh powder for the weekend. The advantage we have here is our altitude. The lodge sits at 8,500 feet and the top of the lift is close to 10,000.”
Jones added that cross country skiers have ample opportunity to get out and explore the area too.
Hogadon
Snow: Powder machine groomed with a base of 8 to14 inches.
What’s open: Five of 24 trails and two of three lifts.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday.
SOUTH DAKOTA
Mystic Miner Ski Resort
Snow: 12 inches of new snow in the past 48 hours. A groomed base of 12 to 24 inches.
Hours: 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, and 8:30 a.. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Deer Mountain.
Terry Peak
Snow: Powder machine groomed with a base of 16 to 22 inches. There has been 6 to 8 inches of new snow this week.
What’s open: Six of 30 trails and four of five lifts.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
