CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill that would bring the state into compliance with a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that outlawed mandatory life sentences for juvenile killers.
The Senate on Thursday voted for a bill that would change Wyoming law so that juveniles convicted of first-degree murder would be eligible for parole after serving 25 years. The bill already has cleared the House and needs two more votes in the Senate.
The Supreme Court's ruling would allow judges to impose life sentences on juvenile killers as long as they also considered alternative sentences.
