Wyoming House approves eminent domain bill

Posted 2/27/13

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming House has approved a bill to require entities seeking to use the power of eminent domain to condemn private property to pay a landowner's legal fees if the courts find they didn't offer a fair price for the land.

The House voted 35-to-23 on Tuesday to approve the bill. It now goes back to the Senate to concur with some amendments.

Supporters say the bill is necessary to make sure landowners don't lose money when their land's condemned.

Opponents including some in Wyoming's energy industry say it threatens to run up costs and drag out the time required to build pipelines and other infrastructure.
