Wyoming lands 23 recruits, 11 already on campus

Posted 2/7/13

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Wyoming achieved balance and boosted its spring enrollment with coach Dave Christensen's fifth recruiting class.

Of the 23 recruits announced Wednesday, 11 are already on campus attending class. Four freshmen and six junior college transfers enrolled at UW for the 2013 spring semester. The 11th member already on campus is junior wide receiver Justin Berger, who was awarded a scholarship after walking on to the team last fall.

Christensen said the early arrivals benefit from being able to participate in 15 spring practices, conditioning and getting to know current teammates.

"They'll get a chance to get in there and practice with us this spring, and some of these guys will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact for us," Christensen said.

The class includes 15 high school recruits and seven junior college players.

The new recruiting class is evenly balanced between offense and defense with 11 recruits each and one special-teams player.

Five of the junior college transfers are defensive players, including three linebackers, who may help shore up a defense that surrendered 33.4 points and 469 yards per game last season. The Cowboys finished last season with a 4-8 record.

Christensen noted the class includes two quality high school running backs in Omar Stover of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Joshua Tapscott of Nokesville, Va.

He also said the team shored up the trenches on both sides of the ball with five offensive linemen and three defensive linemen.

Since the team lost only one receiver from last year's squad to graduation, only one wide receiver was signed.

"I'm really pleased that we got all the guys we were after," Christensen said. "We got 10 guys midyear, which is huge for us to get in here and compete. And I think we filled our needs that we set out to fill."

Seven of the recruits are from California, five from Colorado, three from Arizona and two from Illinois. One player each signed from Wyoming, Hawaii, Missouri, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.
